This Week's Musical Gems: Sibelius

Written by BPO Staff | Aug 5, 2021 3:45:00 AM

Today we bring you a 2017 performance by the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra of Sibelius's Symphony No. 2.

In his pre-concert talk, Maestro Zander calls this Sibelius's "most universally-loved symphony," and explains that Sibelius "presents the elemental power of music, rooted in the organic world." Maestro Zander describes the ending of this symphony as "a blaze of glory...it's one of the greatest moments in all of music...Suddenly, the world is spread out below you, and you look at it in an exalted state...by the end, we are transported to a different world that words simply cannot describe." We are delighted to share this experience with you!

We also invite you to join us for a livestream performance from Maestro Zander's driveway this Sunday, August 1 at 4:00 PM. The program will feature extraordinary French recorder player, Heloise Degrugillier, and BPO cellist Velleda Miragias. They played last year and we were all enchanted by their exquisite music-making and the surprising way that the dulcet tone of the recorder carried through the air. This will be an unforgettable hour! The concert will be broadcast live on Mr. Zander's Facebook page.

We send our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones. Happy listening!
